Voir Technology has launched an ePTFE waterproof, oleophobic, and breathable membrane material.

Voir Technology’s PMU Membrane Materials Division, through research and technological breakthroughs in ePTFE materials, has launched an ePTFE-based waterproof, oleophobic, and breathable membrane material, providing oil-resistant and breathable protection for electronic and electrical components that urgently require such features.

Lubricating oil is required for the moving joints of various types of mechanical equipment, but some electronic housings, control units, and sensors must not come into contact with oils; therefore, oil‑proof measures are essential. In theory, the most ideal water‑ and oil‑proof material could repel liquids of any volume without sticking—but materials that achieve this while also providing pressure relief and breathability are extremely rare and costly. In response to this challenge, Voir Technology’s PMU Membrane Materials Division has made a technological breakthrough, developing an ePTFE‑based membrane that is both waterproof and oil‑proof yet breathable.

Voir Technology’s materials engineer: “PTFE can be processed through stretching and other techniques to produce porous, waterproof, and breathable materials with varying pore sizes. However, because the surface tension of oils is lower than that of water, oils more easily penetrate the pores of the waterproof membrane, leading to clogging on the membrane surface and a loss of breathability. To achieve both oil resistance and breathability, we must apply a special treatment to the ePTFE surface. After extensive research and development, our oil-resistant membrane technology has overcome this challenge and can provide a range of oil‑repellent solutions.”
